Building Community, One Celebration at a Time: The Youth, Heritage & Recreation Committee of New Harbour

In small communities like New Harbour, Newfoundland, connection is everything. The people you share your streets, schools, and shoreline with aren’t just neighbours—they’re family. At the heart of keeping that spirit alive is the Youth, Heritage and Recreation Committee of New Harbour, a volunteer group dedicated to making our town a vibrant and welcoming place through events that celebrate who we are, where we’ve come from, and the traditions that bind us together.

Why Community Events Matter

When we gather, we do more than simply share a meal or watch
a parade—we strengthen the ties that make New Harbour home.
In today’s world, it’s easy for small towns to feel overlooked, but our events remind us of the importance of staying connected.
Each celebration is an opportunity to
pass down traditions, honour our history, and create memories that our children will carry with them for a lifetime.

Celebrating Our Heritage and Traditions

New Harbour has a proud history, one that deserves to be
remembered and honoured.
Events like Remembrance Day bring us together to pause, reflect, and pay tribute to those who gave so much so that we may
live freely.
These moments of shared respect strengthen our appreciation for our heritage and ensure it is never forgotten.

Holidays that Bring Us Together

National and religious holidays give us a chance to celebrate as one community.
On Canada Day, families gather to enjoy the red and white spirit of our nation, while at Christmas, the whole town comes alive with festive cheer.
Our Grinch Who Stole Christmas Brunch brings laughter and holiday joy to children and parents alike, and the dazzling Christmas Harbour Lights Parade transforms our streets into a sparkling winter wonderland.
These events aren’t just about the day itself—they’re about the joy of coming together, year after year, to keep traditions alive.

Creating Fun and Lasting Memories

Not every event needs to be grand to make a big impact. Sometimes it’s the simple things that bring us the greatest joy.
Each summer, children laugh and cheer during our Annual Bobber Race, a quirky and beloved tradition that has become part of the town’s identity.
Summer Movie Nights give families a chance to gather under the stars, sharing popcorn and stories.
When Halloween arrives, the streets fill with laughter and costumes as little ghouls and superheroes go trick-or-treating, reminding us all of the magic of childhood.

Looking Ahead

As our community grows and changes, the Youth and Recreation Committee will continue to adapt and create new traditions while honouring the old.
Whether it’s through a solemn remembrance, a festive parade, or a fun-filled summer evening, our events will always focus on what matters most: keeping New Harbour connected, proud, and full of life.
